In 1962 Barrie Bates changed his name into Billy Apple and subsequently created a living brand that has shaped the artist’s practice for some five decades. In so doing the artist has consistently erased the apparently arbitrary borders between his work and his life. This source book was published on the occasion of a two-part exhibition of the artist’s work at the Witte de With, respectively named: ‘A History of the Brand’ and ‘Revealed/Concealed.’ Alongside providing a useful survey of Billy Apple’s output, the edition also contains written contributions by Christina Barton, Bénédicte Ramade, William Wood and Michelle Menzies, that provide a variety of critical insights into the career of the artist, his influences and singular approach.
