In 1937 the German Jewish businessman Ernst Flersheim fled to Holland. Among his possessions were two works by Jan Toorop; a painting, ’The Thames,’ and a drawing, ‘Faith in God.’ Through a particular set of circumstances the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen acquired the works through the art trade. This book describes the research into the circumstances surrounding the acquisition of the works, their restitution to Flersheim’s heirs, and includes documents, photographs, reproductions and essays.
