The 70s were a dynamic period for both (radical) socio-political change and artistic practice both in the West and former colonial lands that were recorded by a generation of what are now considered some of the world’s finest photographers. This stunning catalogue provides a unique and well-weighed survey of this period as seen through the lens of their cameras. Approximately ten images, one to a page, are afforded to each of the 23 photographers whom include: David Goldblatt, Viktor Kolár, Alberto García-Alix, William Eggleston, Cindy Sherman, Allan Sekula, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Malick Sidibé, Ed van der Elsken, Sophie Calle and Victor Burgin. Accompanying the collection of images are two illustrated essays by Sérgio Mah and Paul Wombell, alongside a selection of classic writings on photography published in the period from Susan Sontag, Allan Sekula, John Berger, Victor Burgin and Roland Barthes. A comprehensive chronology of events in the 1970s is also included along with biographic notes on each participant.
