Building Futures brings together Shahed Saleem’s written and visual research into the history and development of British mosques since the late nineteenth century. Saleem examines how migrant Muslim communities have created mosques through grassroots, self-funded, and self-built initiatives, often adapting existing buildings such as pubs, cinemas, banks, and houses. These spaces combine diverse cultural histories and architectural styles, producing distinctive expressions of community agency, identity, and empowerment. Through his research, Saleem challenges conventional architectural practices and questions where architectural meaning is created and who holds authorship. The publication demonstrates how Muslim communities reshape existing spaces to establish cultural and religious identities within the British diaspora.
