Yan Pei-Ming is best known for his immense portraits that draw upon Chinese cultural history and the Western tradition of portraiture. His paintings are executed with energy and imagination, consisting of expressive brushstrokes and a predominately monochrome palette. A retrospective of Pei-Ming’s paintings and watercolours from 2006 to 2019, this monograph is structured around the aspect of violence and disappearance, and around confrontation with works by old masters as well as with modern iconography and charged political images. It presents new essays on the artist, and is published on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition at the Musée des beaux-arts in Dijon.
