This book explores aspirational montage photography in Pakistan, where fantasy, desire, and vernacular ingenuity converge. Working in makeshift studios at religious festivals and fun fairs, photographers construct imagined lives using collaged landscapes, interiors, vehicles, weapons, flowers, film posters, and religious symbols. Based on material collected by National Geographic photographer Matthieu Paley, the project examines how clients are transformed into heroes, lovers, migrants, and men of means. Rooted in the logic of jugaar, quick, inventive problem-solving, these images go beyond portraiture. They reveal a visual language of male ambition, social longing, and creative survival within constrained realities.
