Cristobal Palma’s photography project documents the “caracoles”: 46 spiral-shaped shopping centres built in Chile between 1974 and 1983. Inspired by New York’s Guggenheim Museum, these buildings extend the urban street space inward through continuous ramps. Today, struggling to compete with modern malls, the caracoles stand as uncomfortable architectural witnesses to a dramatic and turbulent era in Chilean history. Through systematic photographic cataloguing, Palma interrogates these unique urban traces, reflecting on their place in collective memory and the unresolved tensions of the contemporary city.
