In the 1980s, Palermo endured a ruthless campaign of violence to dominate the city, known as the Second Mafia War. In response, a group of prosecutors converged several investigations into the Mafia Maxi-Trial (1986–1987), the largest criminal trial in Italian history. This book traces the history of the trial through the lens of architecture. It reconstructs the design, construction, and functioning of the fortified courtroom, known as the Aula Bunker, built inside Palermo’s prison. Drawing on previously unpublished photographs and documents, complemented by oral histories and custom-made visualisations, it foregrounds architecture as an active instrument of justice and power.
