Giulio Paolini. Vedo E Non Vedo

Eyes and looks, observers and spectators animate many of Giulio Paolini’s works. The clear reference to the visual act, however, does not open our gaze upon any actual vision, nor does it disclose the field to visionariness. Paolini’s device of the gaze is turned upon itself – upon “the ancient phenomenon of seeing” – in order to observe the artifices of representation and enforce the mechanisms of expecting and searching for an image. The theme of seeing (and not seeing) in Paolini's work is investigated in this first volume of the “In tema” series through four essays – written by Erich Franz, Johannes Meinhardt, Riccardo Venturi and Elena Volpato.
