Hierarchy of Genres originates from a printing mistake: ink applied to the glossy side of photographic paper remains unstable, creating images that shift, coagulate, or disappear before being rephotographed. What began as an accident became Calabrese’s method for exploring the boundary between photography and painting, figuration and abstraction, control and chance. The project revisits the six traditional pictorial genres central to Western painting before photography. Drawing on sources ranging from September 11 imagery and selfies to film stills, landscapes, museum archives, and pandemic flowers, the book combines abstract works, accompanied by a text by Milovan Farronato and Chiara Spagnol.
