Artist Dries Verhoeven brings performance art to the Dutch Pavilion for the 61st edition of the Venice Biennale and – through an architectural installation – makes the building itself part of the work. Created in collaboration with curator Rieke Vos, ‘The Fortress’ invites the audience to gaze upon itself, taking the frictions inherent in the Biennale and in national representation as its point of departure. An architectural icon, Rietveld’s pavilion is vulnerable: moisture from the Venetian lagoon is seeping into its walls, gradually wearing the building down. Verhoeven underscores this threat through his intervention, placing buttresses on three sides that appear to shore up the facade.
