Artist James Beckett created a new series of public artworks in Amsterdam’s Eastern Docklands area, on Cruquiuseiland, which emerged from extended research into the site’s material, ecological, colonial, and social histories. Conceived as a portrait of the place, the works reflect on what has unfolded on this terrain, what is taking place today, and how the area may continue to evolve as this former industrial harbour transforms into a residential neighbourhood. Constructed from recycled materials and designed to weather, host bird life, and accommodate modification, the works function as quiet timekeepers – absorbing use, inviting reflection, and gathering meaning.
