Constant Permeke’s promising artistic career was interrupted by the First World War. Mobilized in 1914, he was seriously wounded during the defense of Antwerp and evacuated to England, where he lived in remote villages until 1919. Despite his isolation, Permeke developed a bold artistic style, experimenting with large oil paintings, thick brushstrokes, palette knife techniques, and vivid colors. These years laid the foundation for his distinctive vision, shaped by modernism and humanism. This catalogue traces Permeke’s artistic evolution during his exile and also features works by fellow Belgian artists, including Edgard Tytgat, George Minne and Léon de Smet.
