Lisbon-based José Adrião Arquitectos (JAA) was established in 2002. The firm’s work has mainly focused on architectural rehabilitation, public space, and housing, developing from an attitude of observation and interpretation of pre-existing conditions. Architecture is understood as a process of knowledge: the project emerges from reading the place, the terrain, existing structures, heritage, and memory. It is from this investigation that the design takes shape. Essays by José Manuel Pedreirinho and Sofia Pinto Basto accompany the fourteen works featured in this monographic issue.
