Bernard Plossu, who is often affectionately referred to as ʻthe walking photographerʼ, is in his element in the mountains. His approach, which runs counter to tradition, is a human one, at eye level. For him, the mountains are not grandiose peaks to be contemplated, but a space to be explored. In his images, silhouettes appear – often in the distance – walking, crossing, without imposing themselves. The mountains lose their sacred aura, becoming once more a lived-in, shared space that moves us. His photographs breathe. Sometimes blurred, often off-centre; they hesitate, like the gaze of a walker.
