This substantial body of photographs was taken by Luigi Ghirri between 1989 and 1991 during the making of Strada provinciale delle anime, Gianni Celati’s first feature film. The project developed Celati’s exploration of the Po Valley landscape, begun with Verso la foce (1989). Over three years, Ghirri’s camera documented the filmmaker’s research, revealing a new attention to the human figure. His final body of work before his death in 1992, these images bring friends, writers, students and Celati’s elderly relatives into the landscape. Their three-day journey from Ferrara to the sea becomes a “silent epic of everyday life,” connecting photography, cinema and literature.
