Tek Hod - Embroidered Wrestlers Of The North - David Ellison
In ‘Tek Hod’, David Ellison examines the longstanding tradition of wrestling in Northern England. His series speaks to the complexity of the region’s heritage and the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement. The distinctly embroidered costumes of competitors, with hand-stitched flowers and birds, appear against the backdrop of the Lake District’s idyllic countryside. As crowds move with the weight of the sparring bodies, the wrestlers’ dance-like movements and balletic throws offer a unique spectacle. Mindful of the area’s post-industrial context, Ellison emphasises the importance of sporting events and local fairs, communal gatherings and rituals – and the threat of a dwindling tradition.
