Designed by Ernest Dudley Chase, this map was published in 1931. It depicts the sixty or so countries of the time using the Mercator projection, which preserves angles but distorts distances and areas as it moves away from the equator. The contemporary world blends with history and mythology: alongside Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis, the first airplane to cross the Atlantic in 1927, and Umberto Nobile's Norge, the first airship to fly over the North Pole in 1926, one can see galleons and sea monsters, a Greek trireme, and a Viking longship.
