nai no tomo ('Children’s Friends'), a ten-volume catalogue of traditional Japanese toys, was created by Shimizu Seifū (1851–1913) and published between 1891 and 1923. It features hundreds of woodblock prints depicting toys (omocha) and dolls (ningyō) derived from amulets and talismans rooted in Shintō traditions and Japanese folklore. Jack-in-the-box roosters, rolling whales, magnetic mice, clay sumo wrestlers, pop guns, hobby horses, and noise-making toys—all these objects are considered by collectors and historians to be invaluable records of Japan’s history, culture, religion, and family life.
