Folding screens and hanging scrolls; these and many other Japanese art forms originated in China. The same can be said of handscrolls, whose source was Chinese picture scrolls. In Japan, however, the handscroll format developed in distinctive directions. In the "emaki", a long painting illustrating the accompanying narrative and mounted on a scroll, it became an artistic synthesis uniting literature and painting. The "emaki" is thus an original Japanese art form.
