Born in 1933, Eikoh Hosoe came of age amidst the devastation wrought by World War II. A photographer and filmmaker, he was part of Japan’s post-war experimental arts movement. For ‘Kamaitachi’, originally published in 1969 as a limited edition, he collaborated with dancer Tatsumi Hijikata. Inspired by the legend of a weasel-like demon who haunts rice fields, it documents their spontaneous interactions with villagers in northern Japan, but also enacts a symbolic exploration of Japanese society during a time of massive upheaval. This reworked 2009 edition includes previously unseen images, a new text by scholar Donald Keene, and essays by Eikoh Hosoe and Suzo Takiguchi.
