In 1950, people crossed to Yururi Island, located east of Hokkaido in northern Japan, in search of a place to dry kelp. Uninhabited by humans today, the island is home to the horses that were released into the wild before the last islanders left in the early 1970s. Since 2011, photographer Atsushi Okada has been visiting the island, photographing the remaining horses – only twelve when he first arrived – and their lives in the island’s untouched nature. Okada engages with the horses with a gaze that tries not to anthropomorphise, accepting them as they are. Yet death remains a recurring theme. By the time Okada finished the series in 2024, the number of horses had dwindled to two.
