Through detailed insight into three projects by KAAN Architecten that reflect changing architectural practice in the Netherlands and beyond, ‘Building Narratives’ examines narratives as rigorous drivers of design rather than mere storytelling devices. Design is proposed as a communications engine and collaboration enabler, where architectural design is both an inventory and a curated representation of the available knowledge about a project. Each project – SPOT redevelopment, New Amsterdam Courthouse, Schiphol Terminal competition – emerges from distinct conditions and demonstrates the changing role of design: through negotiation, integration, and activation.
