Disaster fascinates us. Fires immediately draw crowds. Crashed cars are irresistible to most. Nowadays television provides gratification for this human appetite, but in that era before the Thirties it was via picture postcards that people sent each other views of the awful accidents that they themselves luckily avoided. With a reliable postal service, one was at least for a time eluding the fates at large – collapsing bridges, sweeping typhoons, eery subsidences, flood and fire, motor mayhem, train derailments, angry seas, plunging planes – and able to hold a vivid picture with a message in one hand and a cup of tea in the other, at home and probably sitting comfortably.
