Tomihiro Kono sees the face not as a fixed site of identity, but as a mutable interface, an adaptive surface. The Japanese artist and wig maker is known for his beautifully surreal ‘creature wigs’ – wearables that seem more alive than hair ought to be. Kono’s wigs are like a secondary membrane, blurring the lines between human and non-human, the individual and the system. The collection explores forms that resemble unfamiliar organisms, specimens, or cosmic beings, producing a sense of drift between self and other, nature and artifice, body and signal. Photographed and designed in collaboration with his parter Sayaka Maruyama, these wigs were created between 2022 and 2025.
