The “watchie” stands on a small headland, set somewhat apart from the cottages lining the clifftop that together make up the majority of the small village of Catterline in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Lil Neilson first came to this small fishing village as an art student in the early 1960s, invited by painter Joan Eardley, to work alongside her in the old watch-house. Neilson ended up taking care of the older woman until she passed away in 1963, and inherited the building in 1990. ‘The Bitter Cup’ is a novelistic response to the archive of paintings and sketchbooks that Neilson left behind upon her death in 1998.
