Clinamen is published on the occasion of the installation of a monumental version of Céleste Boursier-Mougenot’s work in the Rotonde of the Bourse de Commerce – Pinault Collection in Summer 2025. “These blue islets, their surface dotted with floating white porcelain hemispheres, like the atoms of an endlessly renewed musical form—drifting, colliding, tinkling…” (Emma Lavigne). Boursier-Mougenot’s practice stems from his background as a composer. By extracting musical potential from everyday objects and situations, he creates sound-generating installations that extend the notion of the musical score. Each work is shaped by its architectural setting, offering visitors a visual and auditory experience that reveals the process of music-making. This book traces the evolution of clinamen, first conceived in 1997 in the artist’s Paris apartment and shown that year at CAPC Musée de Bordeaux. Since then, it has appeared in over twenty versions worldwide—under titles such as untitled, variation, duplex, and clinamen—in institutions including MoCA Tokyo, Centre Pompidou-Metz, SFMOMA, and the Asia Culture Center in Gwangju.
