This booklet presents a selection of plates by the English naturalist and illustrator John Gould, taken from the monumental The Birds of New Guinea and Adjacent Papuan Islands, including many new species recently discovered in Australia. Published between 1875 and 1888, its five volumes synthesize the research Gould conducted during his final journeys at the end of his life. Each of the 320 plates showcases the birds’ shimmering plumage within their natural habitats and is accompanied by texts describing both the circumstances of their discovery and their identification—among the most striking being the brilliantly rendered birds of paradise.
