Seisuke Yamamura's most famous work, this brilliantly coloured map depicts Meiji-era Tokyo (1868-1912), with its major palaces, temples, and public buildings. The Imperial Palace complex occupies the city center, while Tokyo's bustling port runs along the bay. Incredibly detailed, the map shows all the city's streets, canals, and important landmarks. The various districts are rendered in their true, brilliant hues and identified by beautiful colour schemes. Tokyo appears in all the prosperity and optimism that characterised the capital in the second half of the 19th century, as it rapidly transformed from an isolated agrarian society into a hyper-industrialized military power with rapid population growth.
