Combining photographs from the National Archives on the world of labour, images taken at mining sites in France and Tierra del Fuego, and layered studio compositions, Sarah Ritter’s project explores the telluric connection between humans and matter - between acts of extraction and those of representation. These images, both documentary and reimagined, investigate spaces where the ground becomes both memory and projection. Through layers of archival material, industrial landscapes, and studio-based play with shadow and light, the work presents an ambiguous, fragmented reading of the underground world. At once archaic and contemporary, its forms, textures, and lighting create a visual experience that invites the viewer to lose themselves in the depths - to encounter that which sustains us, yet continually eludes our grasp.
