Launched in 2021, Hélène Bellenger’s Bianco Ordinario explores Carrara’s marble quarries, now overexploited for calcium carbonate powder used in everyday products. This powder connects to the history of whitening and whiteness in Western culture. Bellenger prints marble imagery inside packaging of consumer goods containing calcium carbonate, pairing them with quarry landscapes to question materiality and consumerism. The project’s book, housed in a screen-printed cardboard box that doubles as wall art, features images and essays exploring the social, environmental, and aesthetic themes of whiteness.
