Andreas Herzau - Helvetica
Helvetica is a photographic analysis of Switzerland. For over half a decade Andreas Herzau repeatedly visited the country and captured the most various places, subjects, and people. He is not interested in coverage photography in the reporting way, but in correlating the encountered with, sometimes own, imaginations that are often obscured by clichés. He shows a country which he appreciates for its accomplishments – even if he soon realizes that it struggles with its own aspirations. As a nation of large economical wealth which is established by a long tradition of liberal democracy and political neutrality, strong national defensive reflexes still obtain. Herzau revolves around those contradictions of the Helvetic self-perception.
