Collected in book form for the first time, the drawn maps by Esther Ernst in this volume originate from her 2020 residency at the Deutsche Akademie Rom Casa Baldi in Olevano Romano. During her stay, she wandered around and recorded the site and its surroundings, as she had previously done during residencies in Cairo, Jena, Johannesburg, and Cape Town. All of these site-specific drawings are at once geographic and biographical. They speak of urban space and of her encounters, experiences, and observations. The often vibrant and complex drawings integrate notes, reflections, and associations, go on detours and off course, and unfold as colourful, dazzling worlds.
