Color, threshold, stone, faux marble, form, walls, aesthetics, complexity. These are some of the key ideas that define the stone world of the Galleria Borghese, one of Rome’s most celebrated museums, home to masterpieces by Canova, Bernini, Caravaggio and Raphael. While the artworks are widely known, the villa’s powerful “marble identity” remains far less recognized. This volume offers a close investigation of the building’s architectural skin, through the collaboration of photographer Domenico Ventura and art historian and museum curator Geraldine Leardi. Their work becomes a gradual immersion into the aesthetic principles that shape the surfaces of the Galleria, revealing the interplay of color and material. Starting with marbles and stones, the exploration expands to include mural painting, mosaic and stucco, uncovering the layered artistry that defines this iconic space.
