Giancarlo De Carlo - naval officer, architect and engineer, teacher, member of Team 10, founder of ILA&UD, editor of Spazio e Società and the series Struttura e forma urbana - passed away in 2005. Author of numerous built works, unbuilt proposals, books and essays, and famously resistant to labels and manifestos, De Carlo left behind a body of work that remains strikingly alive. Twenty years later, his legacy can be read both in the specific paths he traced and in the broader multiplication of trajectories that defined his approach: breaking with the past, changing his mind, swimming against the tide, projecting ideas into the future, writing about doubts and failures, leaving open-ended traces for others to interpret, and above all, remaining perpetually in motion. This issue celebrates the architect while also using the constellation of his work to reflect on the possibility of renewing a multifaceted, wide-ranging idea of design - one that operates across fields, tools, and scales. De Carlo’s oeuvre emerges as a shifting map: under one light, it tells concrete stories and reveals visible histories; from another angle, it becomes an abstract device for generating new writings, new inquiries, and new dérives.
