The Dutch coast line is dotted with the remnants of a Second World War coastal defence line: bunkers, anti-tank ditches and walls, trenches or foxholes. They are part of the over 5000-kilometre-long Atlantic Wall, designed to protect the western border of Hitler’s Third Reich against an Allied invasion. It ran along the western border of Europe, from the North Cape to the Pyrenees. This book offers insights into the functioning of the various systems and the structure as a whole. The atlas consists of a general introduction with never-before-published photographs, a part with newly drawn maps in which the system is analysed from a European perspective down to the regional level, and a concluding part in which the current state of the Atlantic Wall in the Netherlands is the focus.
