‘The Essayer’ is a collection of writings from the academic year 2020/2021 produced by student-readers from the Fine Arts School of Lyon in dialogue with The Serving Library. Initially designed as a one-week workshop that was postponed because of the pandemic, it evolved into a semester-long project of collective reading and writing with editor Stuart Bertolotti-Bailey. Using a selection of Serving Library bulletins as starting points, participants juggled between French and English from different locations. They then produced their own bulletins, which are assembled in this bilingual volume.
