Behind a graceful and beautiful geometric form lies a complex mathematical formula. Such forms are three-dimensional representations of mathematical formulas. These “mathematical models” have been produced in Japan since the early Showa period. One producer of these student tools is the Kato Mathematical Models Factory in Osaka, which was particular about using wood. The labour-intensive method of carving out the complex shapes resulted in a mathematical model that students could easily hold and observe. Masato Shinoda has photographed the mathematical models stored at Kato Mathematical Models and the collection of Nara Women’s University.
