In the mid-1980s, Hans Hamid Rasmussen was an emerging artist armed with a pike pole and a camera. Drawing on his own experience as a log driver and the photographs he captured, he has created a visual account documenting the timber’s long journey downriver, the techniques used in the log-driving process, and the daily lives of the workers. The photographs are annotated by the artist and accompanied by novelist Per Petterson’s childhood recollections of a log-driving spectacle he witnessed in 1960. Originally published in Norwegian to critical acclaim in 2022, this English edition includes a new postface by the editor and an additional photographic print.
