The oldest textile producer in the world, Chiso began as a purveyor of religious ceremonial garments in Kyoto. Founded in 1555, the company specialises in Kyoto-style ‘yūzen’ colouring, a resist dyeing technique. Guided by the philosophy that “tradition is not about preservation but about creation”, Chiso has always explored the leading aesthetic of its time. ‘Painting in Kimono’ showcases works co-created with contemporary Japanese artist Izumi Kato. By employing between 20 and 30 processes, such as freehand painting, shibori tie-dyeing, and embroidery, these remarkable garments were crafted based on Kato’s sketches, expanding the possibilities of the kimono.
