Javier Campano (Madrid, 1950) has been devoted to photography since 1975, emerging during Spain’s political transition and a surge of creative energy. Recognized with the Community of Madrid’s Culture Prize for Photography in 2013, he has published numerous books and exhibited widely, including major solo shows at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (2004) and Sala Canal de Isabel II (2017). His work forms part of key public and private collections, including the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Fundación Telefónica, Fundación La Caixa, and Banco de España. Since the late 1970s, Campano has photographed movie theaters around the world, with a special focus on Madrid. Guided by a keen eye for architecture and the disappearing craft of cinematic signage, he brings together an extensive archive of cinemas and posters that once defined the visual identity of cities such as Madrid, Lisbon, Rome, Cairo, Tangier, New York, and Los Angeles. This publication features texts by Juan Antonio Bayona, Elsa Fernández-Santos, and Juan Cavestany, illuminating the enduring allure of cinema’s urban presence.
